Founded by Glo O'Donnell, Linda Wyman, and Ellen Nelson in May 2000, the Southwest Lending Closet loans durable home health equipment free of charge for up to 90 days. At its founding, a good percentage of the equipment was donated to the Closet by people who found they no longer had a need for the items.
The number of clients served has grown significantly over the years due to word-of-mouth; referrals from doctors, therapists, and hospitals in the Southwest Valley; and from our active participation in community health and resource fairs. Most of our customers are from the Southwest Valley; however, we have had customers from as far away as Wickenburg, Wittman, Quartzite, Ajo, Kayenta, and Sierra Vista.
The Southwest Lending Closet is a 501(c)(3) organization. Tax deductible donations raised through various efforts are the backbone to sustain our mission. Monetary and equipment donations from the public are greatly appreciated and needed to ensure our continued existence. Throughout the years, the Southwest Lending Closet has also been supported by the cities of Avondale, Buckeye, Goodyear, Litchfield Park and Tolleson through competitive grant processes. The Closet has also been aided by organizations such as Kare Bears, Kiwanis, Rotary, the Southwest Chamber of Commerce, and other businesses in the Southwest Valley. The Closet has also been the beneficiary of funds (due to nominations) by foundations such as those run by the American Express, Arizona Cardinals, Bank of America, Channel 12, and Wells Fargo, as well as the Tohono O'odham Nation.
Donations to the Closet go directly to our sole mission of lending durable medical equipment. With administrative costs of less than 10%, donors can feel confident that at least 90 cents of every dollar goes directly to helping our friends and neighbors in need.
